A Speculative Translation Lab: Reflexive Practices for Systems Transformation

This Exploration is a workshop that invites design researchers to immerse in speculative but plausible regenerative project scenarios to examine how translation operates as a reflexive capacity for individuals and teams in transdisciplinary contexts. By mapping how power influences knowledge mobilisation, participants will define opportunities for translational
design (TD) practice. The session foregrounds epistemic authority, legitimacy, and inclusion as design research concerns, and has been designed with the following objectives:
1. Collectively explore how translation operates as a reflexive capability through which designers and collaborators negotiate power and integrate knowledge in systems oriented projects.
2. Advance TD scholarship beyond retrospective case study analyses and frameworks/tools to consider how translation is enacted as a situated, ethical and relational capability.
3. Create a non-traditional research artifact that captures where and how translational practices can aid systems transformation work, to inform future design scholarship.
