Rethinking Translation Technology: Participational Consciousness and Bio-Inspired Design
In this provocation, we theoretically explore the possibility to integrate real-time biofeedback from plants—or non-human plant-based sensory perceptions—into translation processes understood as acts of language movement. Rooted in the concept of translation as a somatic process, our approach considers transmediation as the art of dynamically translating knowledge between humans and non-humans, with texts functioning as sites of relationality. Our paper is speculative, considering how translation might evolve at a time when AI threatens to displace translators, reducing their work to cognitive tasks devoid of sensory engagement. We call for a shift in both research and industry toward bio-inspired design that acknowledges non-human agency and knowledge in shaping innovative translation tools and practices.
