Human-centered Data-Driven Design: Big data with humans-in-the-loop

Designing for people requires understanding their behaviors, needs and interactions. With the increase in available data, HCI and design practitioners and researchers are increasingly interested in leveraging big data to generate new insights, innovations, products, and services. However, there are relatively few studies describing the insights gained with large-scale data about humans, and whether big data alone is sufficient. This study (co-authored by Boyeun Lee and Saeema Ahmed-Kristensen) investigates the use of large-scale data and the insight gained of users to support the designing of products and services. From the synthesis of a comprehensive literature review, we propose a Human-centered Data-Driven Design process to support the adoption of big data when considering humans-in-the-loop. The Human-centered Data-Driven Design process is situated within the data lifecycle, providing a platform for human-centered digital innovation to the HCI and design communities, and beyond.
